A Comparative Study of the Depth of Maximum of Simulated Air Shower Longitudinal Profiles
نویسنده
چکیده
A comparative study of simulated air shower longitudinal profiles is presented. An appropriate thinning level for the calculations is first determined empirically. High statistics results are then provided, over a wide energy range, (1014.0 to 1020.5 eV), for proton & iron primaries, using four combinations of the MOCCA & CORSIKA program frameworks, and the SIBYLL & QGSjet high energy hadronic interaction models. These results are compared to existing experimental data. The way in which the first interaction controls Xmax is investigated, as is the distribution of Xmax.

Comparison of simulated longitudinal profiles of hadronic air showers with MASS2 balloon data
The KASKADE and CORSIKA air shower generators are compared to the data collected by MASS2 balloon experiment in 1991. The test of longitudinal profile for proton, helium and muon flux production provide good constraints on these air shower generators. KASKADE and CORSIKA especially with the new simulator UrQMD for low energies are found to fit these data well. This study is limited to a compari...
متن کاملVariation of atmospheric depth profile on different time scales
The vertical profile of atmospheric depth is an important element in extensive air shower studies. The depth of shower maximum is one of the most important characteristics of the shower. In the fluorescence technique of shower detection, the geometrical reconstruction provides the altitude of shower maximum, so that an accurate profile of atmospheric depth is needed to convert this altitude to ...
متن کاملA study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers
The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...
متن کاملImpact of Varying Atmospheric Profiles on Extensive Air Shower Observation: - Atmospheric Density and Primary Mass Reconstruction -
The longitudinal profile of extensive air showers is sensitive to the energy and type/mass of the primary particle. One of its characteristics, the atmospheric depth of shower maximum, is often used to reconstruct the elemental composition of primary cosmic rays. In this article, the impact of the atmospheric density profile on the reconstruction of the depth of maximum, as observed in fluoresc...

In this paper, we will discuss the prospects of deducing the proton-air cross section from fluorescence telescope measurements of extensive air showers. As it is not possible to observe the point of first interaction X1 directly, other observables closely linked to X1 must be inferred from the longitudinal profiles. This introduces a dependence on the models used to describe the shower developm...
